What I wasn't going to do.

I wasn't going to do this, but this album fits so much. I found it at the peppermint store
where it is described as dark acid folk. I might categorize it as pre-outsider outsider music.
Basically it's british psych/acid/folk but the guitars are out of tune, it's strange, strange, stuff.

Check out the peppermint store, lots of great stuff.

I found another algebrassiere album today. Literally found it underneath a bookshelf while looking for something else. I'll uploaded it soon.

Fuchsia Death Records

Fuchsia Death Records - More Stuff That Hasn't Been Released Anywhere Yet and Some that Never Will Be (2002?)

In the heady, unwashed, wild, Styrofoam days of the earlier internet, back in the 2000 era, when mp3.com wasn't what it is now and myspace wasn't anything at all, some independent music groups put... sentences that they were unable to finish.

One of those was a collective of interconnected bands called Fuchsia Death Records. The name of each band depended on which members of the collective were in it. What I just said doesn't make sense.

There'll be more about this later. Pile Records agreed in 2008 to release some of the early material on CDR. That project is still in the works and will continue to be so until 2028. In the meantime, here's a nice place to start. This is a sampler of songs from the various pieces of the collective, titled, ironically enough, "More Stuff That Hasn't Been Released Anywhere Yet and Some that Never Will Be."

Tracks:
1. VEC - Garbage
2. The Hydrology - 8 is the Number at Which a Beautiful Ewe Sprang Forth From the Bushes
3. The Hydrology - untitled
4. VEC - Garbage
5. BAZ - Ambient Recordings
6. Ob Stokkem - Bon Jovi Getting a Root Canal
7. BAZ - Jar of Mayonnaise
8. BAZ - Vomiting in 3D
9. VEC - Garbage
10. Ob Stokkem - The Ceramic Pig Project (Verdant Thumbtacks Mix)
11. BAZ - untitled
12. Neon Sandwich - F# (live)

Key:
VEC - Viscous Elvis Cyst
BAZ - BAZ

Time For A Song

The music on this LP would fit much better on a blog like time has told me. In fact I'm not even putting the music up because that would require bringing my terrible record player up here and doing some stuff. I am terminally against doing stuff.
Time For A So
ng - S/t (1981)

This album was found at a local goodwill. All songs are traditional folk. This is the first release on Raintree Records. It was recorded at RainTree Recording Studios in New Paris, PA. Produced by someone calling themselves Ragweed. I'm betting this was a fairly limited release.

I'll try to put the audio up sometime.

Chapter House

The following letter was written inside a hardback copy of Frank Herbert's Chapterhouse Dune. I picked it up at a used book fair about a year ago.

It's written to Sherry from a person who may or may not be named Shev or Shei. I can't tell. It seems the two had a mutual infatuation with the Dune universe and the life lessons hidden therein. Not quite sure if this written to friend or lover, but it seems like the two won't be seeing eachother for sometime. The letter seems very spur of the moment, but definitely get's a littly sappy at the end.

If you have any sort of opinion on what the author might be trying to say feel free to comment.

The letter as best I can translate:
Sherry,
"A new beginning!" We are coming to a crossroad in our lives. Very much like Dune. Herbert gives us old favorite characters with new persons and situations. When we part ways (for what will seem like eternity) e will be the old familiar characters confronting new ideas. Like the Bene Gesserit you will always be in my heart and mind, no matter how far away you are physically. Hopefully when you read this book or any Dune book you'll be reminding of our friendship. I hope that a phrase, song , or object that you see on your travels will give you good memories. All I ask is that if its a memory of me; smile (Put a big shit ass grin on your face and everyone will want to (k)now the joke. Me!) I don't understand what brought on this sudden urge to write thin in the book, just patronize my romanticism. Never forget that no matter how far away from each other we end up, I am there for you always.

Love,
Shei (Shev?)

Always Remember:
Art in any of its many faces, was meant to be shared. It is given to a person who in turn must give it to someone else. If it is not shared it will eventually die. If that should happen, then we are an empty shell. For your fantasies and dreams are someone elses reality. And someone elses reality can be your drams and fantasies. I am a cyclke that is fullfilling and beautiful for all.

Found 1/25/09

We've always been interested in what people leave behind. A particular interest of mine is the stuff people leave in books. Some people write their names, some people leave receipts, some people notes. There's no telling what you might find. Here are some items I found today at a used book fair.

Pam Kipp's french homework, found at a used book fair on 1/25/09. This sheet of loose leaf was tucked inside the cover of a French textbook. Lot's of teacher edits, that in typical teacher edit fashion don't say anything.

Name and date inside a used copy of Mr. Sammler's Planter by Saul Bellow. The date appears to be 1971, no idea what the name is. Found 1/25/09 at a used book fair.

ITDE Songs

Halaka - ITDE Songs (2006-2007)

The story behind ITDE Songs:

First off, this is terrible. Really terrible. Sometime in 2006 or 2007 a few members of Halaka set out to record some material specifically for Dave X 's It's too Damn Early radio show. These sessions, recorded in a bedroom, living room, or basement, languished in hard disk hell until one of the members decided to "master" them and send them off to Dave X. The sessions are basically a lot of talking around some improvised acoustic "songs" onto which "effects" were added in "post production." The files were then sent to Dave X for download. Mr. X then burnt the files to a cd, but unfortunately there was the dreaded 2 second pause between tracks and the session ran over to a second disc. Never one to be backed in a corner Mr. X played both discs on air concurrently. He may have recorded this, I'm not too sure, but if he did it's probably much more interesting than the source material itself.

This is the first time that the ITDE Songs have been released to the public in all their naked glory. If pile records ever decides to release a cd-r of this performance it would definitely go in the disgard pile.

satanstompingcaterpillars

satanstompingcaterpillars - flower slides (2000)
edit: This album is really fucking good. I wish they were still making music like this.
under green snails, there are birds.
these guys were once the alleghany whitefish. they come from the hills of western PA, are currently calling themselves
black moth super rainbow and are on the cusp of eating a very large meal (i found a copy of the latest BMSR album at my local chain recordstore, have seen them on MTVU, and they opened for The Flaming Lips in 2007).

Flower Slides was the first of 2 or 3 releases as satanstompingcaterpillars, their sound has morphed over the years from noise filled lo-fi rock, to noise filled folk, to what I would call electronic folk. the vocal style has morphed from quiet mumbles to heavily effected mumbles. this album was the second release
on the now defunct fuckeroo lable and is long out of print, doesn't even show up on the bands discog page. BMSR are currently releasing albums on their own 70's gymnastics label. Buy their records if you get a chance.

I once described flower slides as what it sounds like when you're drowning and you've accepted the inevitable, i still feel that way.

There was talk several years ago of Halaka playing a show with these guys, but it was not to be. My only hope is that BMSR mastermind Tom Fec(Tobacco) still occasionally bathes to the sounds of Halaka.

Improv for Folded Signals

Dave-X Improv for Folded Signals (2007)

Very interesting improv noise drone recording.
From the artist: "Improv for Folded Signals" is constructed from multiple recordings of a single experimental radio action, where numerous streaming instances of a single live broadcast were "folded" back into the mix, utilizing John Roach and Willy Whips's Simultaneous Translator software. The resulting sounds were recorded separately on three cassettes placed at different locations within the broadcast studio. Later, these cassettes were combined in an artistic fashion to create a monolithic mix of differing "viewpoints" of the original action.

Here's the link to the monolithic mix:

Darjeeling Field Recordings [hc118]

artist description: "I made some field recordings in Darjeeling, most significant of which were those of a blind Nepalese beggar at the Chowk Bazaar and the family at the Tenzing restaurant on Burdwan Road.

I was apprehensive about recording the beggar, afraid of looking like a tourist vulture. As you can hear in the recording, I don't think he knew he was being recorded although a friend of his explained afterwards.

The family are Gelong Bhutia, Tenzing Wongmo, Yangchen Dolker (15) and Tenzing Loden (12). I suggested recording Gelong after hearing him when he was at work. I came back the following day and he had prepared the rest of the family to sing as well. Gelong was especially happy for particular songs to be recorded because he is one of the many Tibetan failies in exile, and he hope to preserve something of Tibetan culture."

funny cry happy

funny cry happy

on a clear night you can smell for miles (2004)

This fellow is in now way connected to pile records, but I love this record and it's already on the interwebs for free. So here you go.

Description from the artist: The second full-length from Brooklyn's Funny Cry Happy. Infectiously surreal folk strums set atop an ever-shifting psychedelic sound field of bells, banjos, birds, radio static, recordings made in a tunnel under a highway in Boulder, reconstructed trumpets, accordion, uke, dubbed snares, organ drones, the ever-present toy piano, and whatever else was lying around. The kitchen sink was left off this time (though was included on FCH's self-titled 2002 debut).

Played email tag with fch over the summer, he mentioned he had some new stuff, but it wasn't done yet. We can only hope.

Halaka

Halaka

Our first post here at pile records some Halaka albums for your enjoyment:

Unabridged Dischord
(2008)

description from pile records
:
Unabridged Discord, this is the sound a caterpillar... nah, we've already done that. In 2004 a splintering bit of Halaka set out to record an album in a weekend. Nothing that hadn't been done before, except the intention here was to call it finished at the end of the weekend. In 2008, it's finished. Mellow and occasionally in-tune with itself, acoustic guitars, dry throats, tired hands, harmony from long after the fact, a chord organ or three here and there, and various scratching, tapes, records, that echo they can't seem to get away from, with Madhog even making an appearance, this is Halaka like Halaka would be if weekends were four years long.

A Translucent Gold Statue A Hole (2001)

a review from Splendid:
I don't ask a lot of music, but one of my standing criteria is that I not feel embarrassed about playing it. Translucent made me feel bad for my neighbors, much less myself. Taking ungodly feedback and head-trip lyrics sputtered through cheap filters to a whole new level of impropriety, Halaka hammers out an hour's worth of inscrutable noise passing as rock. No attempts were made to remain in key or carry a tune. Where singing would have sufficed, yelling and howling seemed to be the option of choice. "Comingthroughmydoor" is a paranoia piece that finds the lead singer straddling the line between Soul Coughing's M. Doughty and Seinfeld's Jason Alexander. Halaka spend part of the ten minute-plus runtime of the last track simulating the sound of spanking one another, then laughing uproariously. This must be one of those jokes you had to be there to appreciate. Good thing they go back to yelling soon enough. Faux-hip stylings, such as the album's title, and naming the last two songs on the disc "What You Keep Peeling Off" and "Peeling Off What You Keep" may make the average listener pause, as though there is a wealth of meaning hiding in here somewhere, seeking to be unearthed through repeated listenings. I myself am not about to give in to that line of thinking; my ears hurt after listening to A Translucent Gold Statue, A Hole -- and that alone marks this as one of those rare few discs that will never again see the inside of my CD player.
