Well, the day has come. Luckily at the drawer most of our finds are offered free to the world by the artists through outlets such as archive.org. However occasionally I will upload some Halaka material to mediafire if I want to get something out quick and rather anonymously. In most cases I have had a hand in creating the music I've stored on their site. Several Halaka files are gone now, with no words of warning. One of the removed files is now available on soundcloud, but I leave that for you guys to figure out. All of this new age of the internet stuff is going to cause major problems.

"From the south coast of Wales, Anna Rose Carter started playing piano at the age of seven and was influenced by many modern day classical composers as well as the natural beauty surrounding her. Her debut album Silver Lines came out on Clem Leek’s label Schedios Records.

Bartosz Dziadosz aka Pleq from Poland has been active since 2008 and has been prolific enough to have quite a discography with releases on u-cover, Databloem, dataObscura, October Man, Basses Frequences, Impulsive Art and Progressive Form. Pleq’s work has many influences from drone and ambient to downtempo and glitch but also sometimes including vocals.

My Piano is Broken is a 5 track ep which is a collaboration between the two artists, Anna providing some beautiful Piano ripples, Pleq providing electronic glitches and drones."

In a final pathetic attempt to find out if real beings actually read this place I'm offering a give away. I know a few people come here once in awhile like the guys over at pen&mallet and our friend Appalachian Yard Art, but I see anywhere 30 to 100 visitors a day, and I have no idea who or what they are. So here's the deal: Send an email to eatabighat@yahoo.com with a name and an address telling me what the best thing you've found in the drawer in the makeshift desk and I'll send you something. It'll be great. USofA only, sorry.

I found some stuff while cleaning and I figured I'd give it all away. Here's what's up for grabs:

Halaka samplers - I have several cd-r samplers that were put together in 2000-2001 that never made it out of my place. Some tracks on these samplers have been released others have not. Jewel case with print out liner notes.

Halaka sampler (2009) - a few of these were made by kingo sleemer, comes in a slip case.

Halaka - TVOTISH (2008) - #2 of a 2 run cd-r series done by Fanch, comes in a slip case.

Halaka - bootleg, State of taking over. This was recorded live in the 90's at a show for which no one came. The mix is horrible and the masters were lost. Comes in a slip case. Hasn't been released anywhere.

Halaka - Split rough mix 7/20/2009 - this was a rough mix of material fanch put together for a split album that never happened. It comes on cd-r. I might make some stupid package for it. I might just throw it in a box. There's only one.

Foraged For, Found, & Forged

This is an album of found sound compositions compiled by Charles Rice Goff III.

"Foraged For, Found, And Forged" was the first solo original CDR production created by Charles Rice Goff III (after creating 22 solo cassette productions and three CDR solo cassette retrospectives). Its title sums up its essence: the compositions were all created by pasting together small bits and pieces of found sounds. In the "forging" process, Goff also used a lot of computer effects to vary his found sounds. His only actual "performances" on this album are a few vocals spread around here and there. "

This compilation on Comfort Stand is sort of the reason this blog was started, I mean the blog wasn't started because of this particular compilation, but more, you know, the spirit of this compilation. My friends and I have always enjoyed combing the aisles of thrift stores looking for cassette tape gold.

All recordings are sourced from cassette tapes found in thrift stores and junk shops, tapes dubbed for us and one tape was even found in a gutter! I bought this from a guy on the side of the road for $0.99. It came with a hand drawn cover. There are 4 songs and a commentary track that runs about 15 minutes. This is the third release or "gig" from this artist. The artist categorizes himself as Psychedelic Progressive Punk Rock. I would say this is is the epitome of outsider music. Since I know you're stomachs are already aflutter I present to you: Next Generation Epics

Gourley actually employs overlapping voices, sometimes in harmonies and countermelodies, with Carothers and Sechrist joining in. Trying to figure out more about Pain Hertz, I had to search on archive.org, and found more things not previously mentioned by my colleague. Something from 2004 I am enjoying quite a bit. Still the raucous feel of the jam stuff, but much more song-like in its songness. Some cool vocal switches into falsetto that I enjoy in the first song.

And then I especially like the text: "These are reasonable-quality takes of Alex's Pain Hertz songs in early 2004, right before the tube amp failed."

Wonder if they'd care if we titled something "Before the Tube Amp Failed"?

This is about a 50 minute long improv jam. Starts out with keyboards and turns into more typical rock instrumentation. Reminds me of Halaka in some ways. In other ways not. CAN IT EVEN BE? MORE SUPERELVIS!

This. I think they stole the Beatles and drove them off a cliff while forcing them to listen to Can on cassette in some sort of car made from the bones of Alan Ginsberg. What they've done here, in fact what they seem to have done in all the recordings I've posted, is take lyrics from other artists and sing them over top of their own improvised music. Side A of this record is called Lucy and is pretty interesting, but it'd be better if there were some original lyrics instead. the second side of the record, Love Songs has some nice stuff, but again the lyrics are from other artists. The last track, featuring the words of Leonard Cohen, is a nice bit of guitar and harmonica play. No wave blues.

This isn't for everyone and it sort of doesn't really fit into the nongenre genre that we have going on. It's free on archive.org though, it's my blog and sometimes I get a kick out of this kinda of thing.

So here we've got Dark Opera - Black Sewage from Wildness Records. It's fairly standard black metal, buzz saw guitars, growly vocals, keyboard flourishes. There real winners here are the tracks that feature clean vocals and really melodic choruses. So, I guess this would maybe be a mix of Black Metal and Melodic Death Metal, or maybe it's blast crust punk blackened death n'peth.

Check it out if you like some heavy stuff every now and again. Track 3 Cut Limb is... well I like it anyway.

My criteria might change sometimes. I'm about to link something that's been downloaded 17,113 times. Normally I'd skip something like that. It's pretty arbitrary, but I'm trying to uncover things here. Fanch's criteria may be completely other. I mostly like the things I link, or find something particularly interesting about them.

This thing, though. I don't know yet exactly what I think. After a few songs, though, I know this: I'm pretty surprised at the number of downloads. Not that it's bad. It's strange, and it's goofy, and silly. It's not something I'd expect to have so many downloads. So I find myself wondering if there's something I'm missing (this is something that contains something that went viral?), or, my more cynical side wonders, is someone playing with the system trying to up the number of downloads?

What do the downloads mean, anyway? More on that in a minute. Let's get to the actual.

One other possibility: this label is very good at getting the word out. Whatever, exactly, that word is.

So track 3 is called "Two Dead Chickens And Heaven", and is instrumental, but nevertheless reminds me of some stuff halaka did. One time. I don't remember when.

I like to keep on listening to whatever this is. Still don't know what I think about it.

What's a download? How is the tabulation tabulated? Who keeps the record sheet? What constitutes a download?

My general method for recording was as follows:
1 Enter into an altered state of consciousness and compose a part or the whole of a song.
2 Attempt to get my equipment turned on and set up properly.
3 Record one take of the new composition, often completing it on the fly.
4 Find a musical instrument or household item that could be used as such, preferably within arm's reach.
5 Listen to recently recorded recording while playing found instrument until the part resembles some semblance of an accompaniment.
6 Record accompaniment.
7 Repeat steps 4 - 6 to taste.

So far - nice raw acoustic folk, or really more alt.country. Lo-fi in the sense that there are mic-pops, things like that, but well recorded for all of that.

Goff manipulated the raw audio that he used to create Doublespeak in a variety of ways. Many of the spoken word recordings were simply edited into provocative sound bites. Goff fed audio from both the 1984 Democratic and Republican National Conventions through the Taped Rugs Frippertronics-style tape loop system “live,” as the political circuses were being broadcast to the masses. He also used different applications of the tape loop system to record himself singing and playing electric guitar, tonette, saxophone, harmonica, and innovative percussives. After collecting and editing up the large quantity of source recordings for Doublespeak, Goff measured the timing of each edit and wrote out a plan for meshing them all into a sonic collage. The final production was created with two reel-to-reel master tapes fed through a mixer into a stereo cassette recorder.

I've started archiving the episodes here: pile records podcasts. At that point, once they're there, I guess they can then be considered podcasts. Progress.

In alternate realities, here's something interesting I stumbled upon on archive.org, but linked here to the guy's actually site: Mark Harp - 24 Hours with Mark Harp. this is 24 hours of music in a much different way than Halaka did 24 hours for 888. This is 24 hours of albums by this Mark Harp guy. I'm currently enjoying hour 3, which is music made from samples. Very well done. This doesn't sound much like a piano. It's a pretty spooky sounding ambient piece that sounds like it could be the soundtrack to some kind of science fiction movie, you know the part where there's a lone ship floating aimlessly through space and there's one guy on there that wakes up and realizes everything has gone horribly wrong.

This is Transcriptionists - by Celesteville. Up until I verified that I thought it was Celesteville by Transcriptionists. Let's not cross hairs. It doesn't say much, and as of this writing it's been downloaded 7 times. Here's what it says:

That is all. What the hell is NaSoAlMo? National Solo Album Month? That'd be my guess. There are, at this point, enough of those things that anytime you get that creative bug you can probably go find one to start tomorrow.

First track is noise, and I was prepared to post some gibberish about noise. There's not really a lot to say about noise, right? But get to track two, "Samideano Blues", and it's mellow and has vocals. It's very good. Track three is upbeat and songy again. Basically this is well performed indi-pop-punk-stuff, lo-fi but not nearly as much as most of what I track down and call lo-fi. Track four, "Watering Tomatoes, Nov 1", has some toy piano, fluttery noises, and is really minimal (not in the technical, musical sense of the word.) Vocals with reverb sort of barely sung alongside this sparse arrangement of noises and that heavily effected toy piano. In the space where there isn't ambient drones and feedback, I'm kind of thinking there could be ambient drones and feedback, but I'm not actually anybody.

Track five, best title so far, "Bullet Points from Inspirational PowerPoint Presentation", is excellent. Too short. Dirty and mean.

So whatever/whoever this is, and whatever NaSoAlMo is, I'd say this is worth a listen. More than that. This is very good, and with every new track I am surprised at the variety. Still it's holding together well as a piece. I'll be adding this to something for further repeat listens.

I like so much of what I heard I've decided to post the entire Poolord record or is it two records? It's an interesting combination of acoustic guitar and psychedelic electronic effects. Something like a Syd Barret solo album if he could've made it by himself using computers from the future. In addition there are songs about bodily functions. Some of this is great and some of it is horrible. Enjoy it.

Something worth Sampling?

Today on the programme I'm going to stand on the desk and beat on the overhead lights with my shoe. "I just want to emphasize from the beginning that exorcism is a rare thing, and demonic possession is a rare thing." First, some discussion about exorcism, from a Catholic priest and some other guy, includes such knee slappers as a dude saying something comes from Ephesians 7, which DOESN'T EXIST!!! A HA HA! HA! Remember sampling can have another meaning! I've avoided listening to some things on archive.org due to their being single songs instead of albums. Here's one such thing, The Exorcism of Candy Caramel by Captain the Parrot. "Improvised and recorded live on 2nd October 2009 in Sapporo, Japan." d/l vbr mp3. Kinda neat, very short, needs other stuff all around it.

How about this? "all tracks by kevin mehmed and sage brooks in montgomery county maryland." Starts of with a synth washing the blackboard, but then the kind of thing we look for around here comes out of somebody's voicebox, talking into a distorted thingy-dinger. "I think about spaceships all the time." The Townhouse Situation and Kits Exorcism" by kkkkasioflubellegend and deepgrave min og dog. Four tracks and one of them looks a lot bigger than the others. Yes, an hour and 13 minutes called "kevin's rock 09-04-10". Horrible guitar, and I'm just sampling here so I can't tell you about the whole hour plus. The other three tracks are actually song-length. If you find something in this block of stuff let me know about it. I think these guys must've lived up the street from me. To be fair this collection could've used its own post.

Finally, something else full length, Noises Of War by Herd of Ether Space, a 1991 cassette album; noises and tapes and samples, oh my. Here are some words:

The show was hosted by the "Art Here" Gallery in Albany, California. The performance was filmed and the live audio was recorded. Taped Rugs Productions released a cassette album from the performance, entitled: "Noises Of War" (NOW) later in 1991. The tape was co-released by the California outlet of Kentucky Fried Royalty recordings, supervised by Don Campau. A couple of edits from the rehearsals were released by Taped Rugs in the following years on other cassette albums as well.

This archive contains all of the audio recordings from the March 1st performance as well as several recordings from the rehearsal sessions. The rehearsals vary in many ways from the actual performance pieces. Their inclusion in this archive helps define the evolution of the performance pieces and showcases the degrees to which HOTES incorporated improvisation into their compositions. Several of the rehearsal recordings archived here have never previously been made available to the public. This archive also contains jpeg files of the cassette cover art for all of the releases related to these recordings as well as jpeg files of the NOW promotional poster and NOW show program.

This doesn't really fit here, it's like a rose garden full of ketchup bottles in the morning, but I'm really enjoying it. Dark, gloomy, alt-country, like bonnie prince billy and johnny cash's American Recordings. Sort of. The drums sound canned which is a bit of let down on the tracks with percussion, but the acoustic guitar driven type songs are really pretty great.

There are other albums by this artist on the archive. You can look them up yourself.

I don't think the people in this "band" actually exist. I think they are figments of an element or maybe light bulb processor units. There's some buzzing.

here's the description:

"The philosophy: Set up in a hall with various musical instruments, computers, and a bunch of electronic toys.
Press record and start playing while consuming large amounts of alcohol. Pray for inspiration.

Most of these tracks were recorded direct to 2-track minidisc. No overdubs and very few edits.

Waking Up The Sun, by Whisky Club Ensemble, is on my pavement today. It's raucous, and callous, and I'm pretty sure they honestly don't care that that one sound is like a siren made out of a buzzsaw. I am positive I hear circuits that are bent. I hear an orchestra. I think everything is on top of everything else.

This is fourteen minutes, all one track, so what you call it is... what it is.

I think you should listen, but first you can read it from the mouth:

During one of the first nights of April a group connected with Charles Bukowski's Whisky Club performed cacophonic ritual of waking up the sun on the top of mountain X over the bay Y. The ritual – strongly influenced by Slavic neo-paganism – is a form of reuniting with Nature glorified by sounds and lets the cosmic energies flow through participators, their ideas & their music. All emotions of these moments flew out unimpeded through instruments in an easygoing jam session in unusual circumstances of nature. Edited version of what was played during that event - of which successors will be speaking in poems for a long long time after – is track presented here: digital clash of psycho-folk and way-too-free jazz made from original recordings with a sense of humor typical for Recycling Records. Or maybe it all never happened...
