Phase Velocity Halaka/Simon Waldram Split Cassette

Limited edition split cassette from the brand spankin' new Phase Velocity label. For their first release they've chosen split cassette from American experimental cult of nobody band, Halaka, and British singer/song writer Simon Waldram. Swalaka is limited to just 30 copies, and I think there are only 18 left. Each side is around 40 minutes. Halaka's side, titled Terminal Inside, plays as sort of a single piece, while Waldram's side is broken into traditional song segments. You can buy the tape here: http://phasevelocity.bandcamp.com.

Once these are gone there probably won't be anymore. Cassette is currently the only format this music is available in. No digital downloads have surfaced, but some excerpts have been posted over at soundcloud by Phase Velocity.

Check out
Halaka: Terminal Inside (Excerpt) this is the band at their most straight forward, there's something about this that makes the listener want to punch their surroundings because the ladder doesn't reach to the top.

Simon Waldram: Revolt! an experimental sorta of punk ditty that turns a bit progressive towards the middle. The fuzzy production might cross into shoegaze territory, but without the whole wall of sound.

These tapes were made  by hand and feature liner notes from Halaka's man of mystery, Kingo Sleemer.

I'll post a full review when my copy arrives.

Michael FH Cunningham

Here are three songs from Michael FH Cunningham. Lo-fi bedroom something or other with the occasional horrible, but there are elements. Yes indeed, there are elements that make these songs something to listen at.

Marshstepper

Here's some noise from the west coast to make this intolerably hot east coast afternoon even more sweaty.

Marshstepper is an array of guitar squonks, bass drones, and the occasional drum machine. Sometimes there are voices that yell at you. It probably music for a seizure. They also made a movie called In Pure Linen.

Choke - Gauze/Total Reverence

Thanks to the folks over at http://penmallet.blogspot.com/ for sharing the Choke releases. This is some cool early 90's post punk shoegaze stuff from New Mexico. Very interesting. Something in my brain tells me that had this band been doing this stuff now they might be very popular.

Spinning Clouds

Spinning Clouds - Moving Many Things & Shaking Windows With Strong Fingers is the type of weird lo-fi breathy pop music that owes a lot to groups like The Music Tapes, Neutral Milk Hotel, and The Olivia Tremor Control. The songs here are short, more like snippets of records from different tapes. If you're a fan of the above mentioned groups give this release a listen. Free Download on bandcamp or you can purchase one of a limited run of cd-rs.

New AYA

Hey all, go check out the new Appalachian Yard Art tape, Green Glass. I think it's probably the best thing he's done yet. Noisier and more involved than his earlier recordings. Go download it here: or listen to it right now:

Caves - Peter Grier

I think I posted a link to this record last year. I'm listening to it again as I drink my coffee and wait for winter to return. It's really, really, really good stuff and it only has 16 downloads. It should really have a lot more. Here's the artist's description: "Caves is Peter Grier with a 4-track Cassette recorder. Recorded 2008 2009. Released as a split cassette with Stephen Cooley July First 2009. No computers or synths used in the writing or recording of this music."

As always, the stuff on this blog has been made available for free by the artists, in most cases via archive.org

Enjoy.

More From The Comfort Stand

This compilation on Comfort Stand is sort of the reason this blog was started, I mean the blog wasn't started because of this particular compilation, but more, you know, the spirit of this compilation. My friends and I have always enjoyed combing the aisles of thrift stores looking for cassette tape gold.

Party Fun with Recorders Volume 1:

"Home Recordings. Children singing, screaming and storytelling.

Remember when you were a kid? Did you have a recorder? Even if you never held a microphone to your mouth and screamed making funny faces, I'm sure you can recall a time when you jumped around like a silly little monkey hooting and hollering. Maybe you still do! We hope so.

All recordings are sourced from cassette tapes found in thrift stores and junk shops, tapes dubbed for us and one tape was even found in a gutter! The only exception being the last track on this recording, by Grandpa Norm, singing to his grandson and we thought it fit quite nice on this compilation of home cassette recordings."

*I haven't actually listened to this yet because I'm streaming the pile records radio show to get an idea of how it went. It would be kind of helpful to me if the few people that come here on a regular basis leave some comments or something. I want to know what you think. Thanks. Improv for Folded Signals

Dave-X Improv for Folded Signals (2007)

Very interesting improv noise drone recording.
From the artist: "Improv for Folded Signals" is constructed from multiple recordings of a single experimental radio action, where numerous streaming instances of a single live broadcast were "folded" back into the mix, utilizing John Roach and Willy Whips's Simultaneous Translator software. The resulting sounds were recorded separately on three cassettes placed at different locations within the broadcast studio. Later, these cassettes were combined in an artistic fashion to create a monolithic mix of differing "viewpoints" of the original action.

Here's the link to the monolithic mix:
