More things from the Woozy Tribe

Yesterday I stumbled on the music of Cool Timmy or Timothy Wizard who seems to have a number of releases under different names. Deathwish & Dead Bells falls under the messedupcoyote banner and it's fucking awesome. Noisy, loud guitars, punk rock, video game melodies. This guy does all this stuff by himself at home. I might like this record more than than the Cool Timmy album I posted yesterday. Again it's a PWYW release so go grab this and crank the hell out of it.

Here are three songs from Michael FH Cunningham. Lo-fi bedroom something or other with the occasional horrible, but there are elements. Yes indeed, there are elements that make these songs something to listen at.

Porn Moth

I can't find much on Porn Moth other than this two song demo on Bandcamp. It's some sort of lo-fi bedroom noisy pop music. I wish there was more of it.

Jim Storie Juniors

Lo-fi sort-of-punk rock 'n' roll with some kick-ass stuff going on.


Listen to the second track - Goods and Services. Something about this guy's off-kilter, offsides, off-to-the-side vocals reminds me of a Beach Boy. Maybe Brian Wilson really isn't dead! Or, I mean, the actual Brian Wilson is not where he says he is but is instead in Toronto releasing free off-key weirdness. Listening through the tracks on here I can't quite get my footing, figure out what I think. Some great lyrics, some okay. Somewhere around the 4th track it got all mid-tempo and even draggy. This is sort of like early Weezer shoved through the skeleton key keyhole in the closet door at mom's house. Things pick up again with Sunshine, lots of voices doing not-quite-the-right-thing, and then we move into the title track, with its bouncing rubber ball bass line and psychedelic echoes on the vocals. The guitar gives this one a dark edge.

Bad Turkey

"The first (and most definitely worst) LP by Isaac Jacobs & The Abrahams"

Pretty much what'd you'd expect when you search Archive.org's audio section for "Bad Turkey" and scroll down through four pages of "podcasts". An acoustic guitar and the occasional vocal accident. Track 5, "mad cow disease," is kinda nice in the way that, for me, this kind of thing can be kind of nice. I'd prefer somebody singing on it. Track 7 is "Turkey Jerky is Bad", and that's how we ended up here, in this terrible place, right now.

Wonder if they have a "last (and most definitely not as bad as that) LP" anywhere?

The Abrahams Unplugged (July 7, 2007) - Their sixth LP. More produced. Still pretty terrible. Intentionally so, I think. They reprise "Retard on a Guitar" from that first album here, called "Still a Retard on a Guitar". Definitely something has improved here, but this guy, when he sings, still insists on sounding like one of my kids trying to annoy me. And who knew? With a song title like "Do Not Sniff (fff) 2007" I would expect something meaningful. (to be fair, some of you know my background - if it weren't for the intentionally annoying vocal I'd enjoy this.) The track immediately after it - "Nineteen Ninety Three" - this is better. Much better. Backwards voices, whispers, some nice layers of atmospheric acoustic guitars. I'll leave it there.

Spinning Clouds

 

 Spinning Clouds - Moving Many Things & Shaking Windows With Strong Fingers is the type of weird lo-fi breathy pop music that owes a lot to groups like The Music Tapes, Neutral Milk Hotel, and The Olivia Tremor Control. The songs here are short, more like snippets of records from different tapes. If you're a fan of the above mentioned groups give this release a listen. Free Download on bandcamp or you can purchase one of a limited run of cd-rs.

Shakey Graves

Here's a nice little lo-fi folk doom country kinda thing from Shakey Graves. It's pay what you want on bandcamp. It's somewhat reminiscent of Bonny 'Prince' Billy or things of that ilk. Maybe a little more upbeat. There are those little lo-fi home recorded touches that I enjoy, things like hand claps and what could be banging on a desk or chair or box for percussion. The layered vocals make this thing sound better than just a guy pickin' and singin' into a tape recorder. Give it a chance.

Anything that has a cardboard dulcimer is good in my book. Ian Adcock's first album is a noisy, lo-fi, folk record with lots of tape hiss, odd sounds, and vocals that sort of remind me of whispering Thom York, but from an alternate universe. This is something to listen to in your closet, late at night when you're not quite sure what is happening around you.

This seems to be the only record he's got on archive.org. Info says it was available in a limited run as a cd-r, bu there isn't any info about how to get a copy.

More Spencer Owen

This is still very experimental, but has vocals and is sort of lo-fi indie noise rock. This recording sounds great and could fit right in on college radio today. Sort of like Folk Implosion or maybe Self, with a little bit of Jeff Magnum and Super Nintendo thrown in. The artist calls this "art pop."

Hmm. These recordings claim to be from the '70's recorded in a rehearsal room at VCU. I don't really believe it. It's a lot of improvised studio noise. Pianos, harmonicas, acoustic guitars. Maybe outsider art? Boombox blues?

Duplicate Bridge

Following closely on the heals of my previous post, I've found something interesting (and related) with even fewer downloads. It's like a hardly-any-downloads-contest.

I'm not going to go into detail, but the description is interesting:
Spirit Duplicator - Duplicate Bridge. Recorded Nov. 2007 as part of NaSoAlMo. Song titles were developed in collaboration with Steve Egan/Steven Arntson, who did an album, also called Duplicate Bridge, with the same song titles. SD = 100% Jacob Anderson. This one's a little out of control. Thanks for listening.
